TikTok Employee Rejects Spending Less

How a Dollar General Employee Went Viral on TikTok, the ‘Social Network for Millennials’

When we see an image of a $4.99 T-shirt, we think of the most basic necessities, like groceries and a new car. But when we see one of the hottest memes from the viral Tumblr, $4.99 T-shirts, we think of far more than the basics.

“$4.99 T-shirts are the embodiment of the new generation,” the employee wrote. “You can get many different items at $4.99, from new clothes to a $25,000 engagement ring. The clothes are cute and cool but are way out of line with our generation. The same for the engagement ring,” she wrote.

What was it that made this particular employee so popular on the platform known as TikTok? She was obviously a millennial who is extremely obsessed by the idea of spending less.

“I’m a 30-year-old woman from Florida and we all enjoy the things we spend our money on,” she said, adding that she has a T-shirt that she wears every day. “I have a beautiful life and do not need to spend any money whatsoever. With money, I don’t even need to know it exists, or have to spend any time making decisions.”

And her most extreme reaction to spending less?

“I refuse to wear “a $4.99 T-shirt.” The idea that I would have to spend money on something is completely absurd to me,” she said. “You don’t need a $20,000 engagement ring because no one really needs that kind of money. No one wants to put money into a family member unless they’re really good to them. But I still would put $20,000 into my family, and I’m not the bad person in this situation. I would wear many different clothes, including fancy shirts, but I wouldn’t spend money on ‘a $4.99 T-shirt.’ It would be ridiculous.”

Not only is she obsessed with trying to spend less,
