Tie-Dye, from the Latin word “tiegatus,” meaning “covered with stripes or band,” is a craft from America that originated in the mid-1800s. The practice is often compared to beading, jewelry making and embroidery.

The word “tie” in tie-dye refers to the process of dyeing a fabric or clothing item. A design is often created by applying stripes and dots of dyed fabric to the material. After the stripes have dried, the fabric is then cut into strips and a pattern was laid upon them.

From there, the strips may be sewn to create individual pieces. One of the most interesting ways to use tie-dye is to create a skirt by sewing together the individual pieces. Many fabrics used in tie-dye are manmade materials like nylon, velvet, silk, and cotton.

The use of tie-dye in fabric is quite popular in the United States, since it was discovered by American artist and industrialist Charles Frederick Worth in the 1880s. At the time in fashion, people were making tie-dye items like jackets to wear over their suits.

In today’s tie-dye, it is commonly sold by the yard and not by the 100th of an inch. Tie-dye is not just for sporty outfits though. Modern designs are for everyday use. It can even be used to make costumes and props such as for television shows, films, and commercials.

Tie-Dye is often used to make items like scarves and dresses to match a particular style or fashion. Today, tie-dye is mostly used to create clothes that are fashionable to the person wearing them or to wear at a certain date or time.
