Images of the Houston and South Texas tornadoes are being shared widely around the world as locals and millions of Americans from coast to coast dig out from the disaster.

While Monday’s tornadoes caused extensive damage on their very southern path of destruction, the more extreme damage occurred over higher ground in the Houston suburbs.

Here are some stunning photos from around the US.

President Trump tweeted about the devastating storm, saying “Too many lives have been lost. We will stay on top of this story and do everything we can to help.”

The storms came during a day of intense sunshine and warm temperatures, with record-breaking highs that surpassed 50 in many locations.

The number of tornadoes stood at four as of 5:30 p.m. ET.

Two states north, Illinois had a tornado watch in effect until 4:30 p.m. ET Monday, the National Weather Service tweeted.

The weather service said the Chicago and Cape Girardeau locations were under the watch for a possible severe weather outbreak.

In east central Texas, authorities were not expecting any major tornadoes, but if one did hit, it might be on a large scale, the officials told CNN affiliate KHOU.
