One man has been shot by police near Buckingham Palace in London after a confrontation broke out on the Waterloo Bridge on Friday evening.

London police said that shots were fired after police were called to the scene at around 7.15 p.m. local time and a man in his 30s died at the scene.

“A number of people were in attendance when officers discharged their weapon,” they said in a statement.

One witness said that two men, who appeared to be carrying firearms, had jumped off Waterloo Bridge, close to where King Charles II once stood, after which a massive police response began.

The injured man was taken to hospital and his condition is described as critical, according to London’s Metropolitan Police.

“We are working closely with colleagues from the MPS firearms command unit and all subsequent enquiries are ongoing. I would like to reassure Londoners that officers are working hard to track down the individual responsible for this terrible act,” Superintendent Clotilde Villa said in a statement.

“We know that a number of witnesses have come forward, so I would urge them to get in touch with police immediately.”
