Former US vice-president Joe Biden has had his first late-night interview since losing out to Barack Obama for the Democratic nomination in 2008.

The 71-year-old, who now promotes health care and foreign policy, said that his successor had put the country at a “tipping point”.

His new book, Promise Me, Dad, was published last week.

Mr Biden said he would now spend time in California, where he is a member of the Senate.

He added that, “as a farmer” his return to political life was somewhat “like planting a raspberry bush.”

Mr Biden, who was speaking on Tuesday to CBS’s The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, said he had been “appalled” by some of the rhetoric of the US-Mexico border crossing between San Diego and Tijuana.

Some of the immigrants were attacking US police and “not any people from Central America”.

The former vice-president also had a relatively friendly exchange with the host, in which he was shown a clip of Mr Trump having mocked the accuracy of Mr Biden’s fibromyalgia (disorder of muscle communication) diagnosis.

In Promise Me, Dad, Mr Biden also labels Donald Trump a “jerk” in his book.

“There is absolutely no question in my mind that Donald Trump is a jerk,” he said on CBS.

“Do I think he’s the most talented person ever to hold the office of the presidency? No.”

Mr Biden told The New York Times earlier this month that he would seek elective office again only if Mr Trump succeeds in his bid for the White House.

Despite the apparent contrast between them on the issue of foreign policy, Mr Biden said he needed to “step back” and take a break if Mr Trump led the country.

“I need to spend time on my farm, if he wins,” Mr Biden said.
