Indonesia police: Stadium exit gates too small for escape, man dies

Police officers in Jakarta say an Indonesian man trying to escape a stadium accident Sunday has died trying to jump from the exit gates.

Video taken at the accident site shows police officers rushing over a body in the exit gate area of the stadium in Jakarta.

Officials say a second man who tried to escape was pronounced dead when he fell from a bus next to the gate.

It’s not clear why the two men made the attempt.

Police say it was a clear April morning, and the stadium, currently being turned into a convention center, was crowded when the accident occurred.

A football match was in progress, and several people tried to rush out to escape the chaos, police say.

Several people were injured.

Police say the man who died did not have a ticket to leave the stadium, and “the exit gates are too small for him to jump over”.

The dead man, according to police, was not an official spectator.

Police in Indonesia and neighboring countries have come under fire over the death of hundreds of foreigners in accidents at sports events in recent years, many of which were connected to drunken driving.
